Surrey, BC – Surrey Archives will host a roundtable focused on the history of LGBTQ2S + (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questionnaire and biased) in Surrey.
The free online talk, which will take place on June 9 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm via Microsoft Teams, will feature three panelists who have long been leaders in the community, including Martin Rooney (Surrey Pride), Alex Sangha Sher Vancouver) and Jennifer Marchbank (Simon Fraser University, Surrey Pride, Youth 4 A Change).
Panelists will share stories related to their personal experiences and those of their respective organizations. LGBTQ2S + milestones and past and present advocacy efforts in Surrey will be explored, including discussions of how race, religion, and gender influence the individual experiences of the community.
“People in the LGBTQ2S + community have probably always been part of Surrey’s history. However, they are underrepresented in the historical record because of the stigma surrounding discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity.” said panelist Dr. Marchbank. “Hosting an event focused on Surrey’s LGBTQ2S + past helps bring this story to light.”
As with all Surrey Archives events, public participation is recommended. During the roundtable, members of the public are invited to ask questions and learn directly from prominent leaders in the LGBTQ2S + community in Surrey. This session will be recorded.
