Suspect released after shooting Manitoulin

Police are investigating after a person suffered life-threatening injuries from a shooting last night in the first nation of Sheguiandah.

SHEGUIANDAH FIRST NATION, ON – Police are investigating after a person suffered fatal injuries from a shooting last night in the first nation of Sheguiandah.

On June 24 at approximately 11:45 p.m., the Manitoulin Anishnaabe United Police Chiefs and Councils (UCCM) received a complaint about weapons in Wiingush Miikan, Sheguiandah First Nation.

When police arrived at the scene, they found that a 32-year-old man had suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital.

The suspect fled the scene before police arrived, but police believe the incident was isolated because they believe the victim had been the target.

This is an ongoing investigation under the direction of the OPP’s Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), with the assistance of the UCCM Police, the Ontario Provincial Police Crimes Unit ( OPP) of Manitoulin, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) of the Northeast Region OPP, Forensic Identification of the OPP. Services (FIS) and the OPP Regional Support Team (RST).

The OPP reminds all citizens to be vigilant about their personal safety at all times.
