A suspected machete-wielding attacker has been arrested after several people were taken to hospital with stab wounds near Liverpool FC’s stadium.
Merseyside Police were called shortly after 5.30pm to Arkles Lane, Anfield, to a report of a man walking around shouting at people and carrying what was described as a machete.
He was reported to have assaulted several people, with some victims attending hospital and receiving treatment after sustaining stab wounds.
None of them are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.
The man, who is from the area, was arrested a short time later in Stanley Park, before being arrested and detained for questioning.
Police say the incident is not believed to be terror-related and the suspect is believed to have mental health issues.
Detective Chief Inspector Cath Cummings said: “This incident will have been terrifying for both those assaulted and those who witnessed it, and we will offer them our full support.
“I understand that the circumstances will also be appalling for the wider Anfield community.
“Thankfully specialist officers attended quickly, arrested a suspect and brought the incident to an end and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
“While we do not believe anyone else was responsible, additional officers will be deployed on high visibility patrols in the Anfield area over the coming days to reassure the community.”
Dan Carden, MP for Liverpool Walton, said: “Horrified by reports of the situation at Anfield tonight. I am in contact with Merseyside Police who have made an arrest and say there is no ongoing threat to the public , and luckily. no life-threatening injuries have been reported.”
