Despite a sunny Sunday, the rains will return this week with up to 50 millimeters forecast in Sydney over the next seven days.
Sunday’s forecast is for the heaviest falls to arrive on Wednesday and Thursday, with up to 15mm of waiting each day.
Weatherzone senior meteorologist Brett Dutschke said La Nina had been a “protagonist” in the amount of rainfall recorded in Sydney this year.
“Even though La Niña has now faded a bit, we are in a new stage,” he said.
“This stage does not appear to lead to significant increases in flooding in the main areas affected by the floods, but it will be annoying as the recovery is still underway,” he said regarding recent floods across the state.
Sydney has already recorded the wettest July in history, despite being in the middle of the month and Dutschke said the record is likely to break again and more rain is expected to fall in the next fortnight. Rain is due to the combination of an unstable weather system that develops on the high seas, warmer than normal water also sitting on the shore and colder than the air that passes over it.
“It won’t rain all week, but it will and it will go out [for the rest of July]”He said.
This combination means we won’t see another long period of dry weather until August.
