Teachers and doctors are threatening to side with railway workers if the government fails to meet their demands for a pay rise, as the UK’s most militant union leader raised the possibility of a general strike.
With travelers facing a week of railroad chaos, teachers have joined the list of those considering strike ballots, which also includes doctors, nurses, civil servants, local government staff, lawyers, post workers, BT engineers and traffic wardens.
Teachers will begin the strike procedure if they do not receive a significantly improved salary offer before Wednesday. NHS staff are also likely to be informed of their salary this week.
If their salary does not increase significantly, the nursing union will consult its members on what action to take.
