Teenager charged with first-degree murder in February shooting death

Ottawa police have charged a 16-year-old boy with first-degree murder in the Feb. 21 shooting death of Sahur Yare.

The teenager, who cannot be named because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in court on Friday and was remanded in custody.

Yare, who was in his 20s, died after being shot and then dropped off at the Ottawa General Hospital campus by a driver who left the scene.

At the time, sources told CBC Yare and her boyfriend were in a car operated by a ride-hailing service when they were apparently shot.

Bullets struck the passenger side of the car while it was near Johnston Road and Pennard Way in the city’s Greenboro neighborhood, sources said.

The driver who dropped off Yare and her boyfriend at the hospital was found a short time later. Approximately 90 minutes after arriving at the hospital, Yare was pronounced dead.

A teenager escaped from the juvenile detention center

A Canada-wide warrant was issued for the teenager on March 25.

The teenager had run away from the William E. Hay Center on Hawthorne Road, a residential facility for 12- to 17-year-olds who are in pretrial detention or post-trial custody.

According to police, the teenager is from Ottawa.
