Summer Game Fest: Play Days + Seth Cuddeback
LOS ANGELES — Last week’s Summer Game Fest was mostly a virtual affair, full of video game trailers that may or may not be released in the next 18 months. However, as the gaming industry moves closer to the normality of convention previewing, we got invitations to two early June events with games that will be playable soon.
You may have already seen my highlights of these events: Street Fighter 6, which is great, and Sonic Frontiers, which is weird but promising. This article summarizes the “best of the rest,” based on practice tests at the Summer Game Fest Play Days in Los Angeles and a series of remote connection demonstrations at the Tribeca Games Festival. The events missed some of the world’s largest developers and publishers, probably because many of their games have advanced to 2023. While this list is more on the indie side, we’re behind these highlights of the game preview thanks to how they felt playing.

Cuphead’s hellish brutality will return later this month as a $ 7.99 DLC pack. If the level of sample head I’ve played is an indication, this DLC will reach a sweet spot for fans of the series instead of turning Cuphead’s formula upside down.
A new playable character, Mrs. Chalice, is available as a “charm” that a player can equip at any time, and includes some benefits for beginners, such as an extra health point, a double jump, a stop that doubles. as a forward race and a somersault that adds a few frames of invincibility. His new skills weren’t necessarily essential in the new boss battle I played, though due to being terrible at Cuphead, I still struggled with all three phases of the fight, which included a sudden transition to floating, rotating platforms. It is available in a new campaign that executive producer Marija Moldenhauer says Ars is comparable to the third island in the original game, which included seven heads and two levels of platforms. Moldenhauer says the DLC will have six heads, which he insists are more involved and complicated than the selection of the standard game, but otherwise would not clarify what else the DLC will contain.
Moldenhauer also says that the DLC includes almost as many hand-drawn animated backgrounds and frames as the entire standard Cuphead campaign. This could mean that the boss battles I haven’t played yet are even more intense or that there’s another massive platform challenge to come. Either way, $ 7.99 seems like a must-have DLC option for anyone who’s already invested in Cuphead’s meticulously hand-drawn 2D action.

EA and Codemasters organized a 2022 F1 game show to showcase the newest feature in the series: virtual reality racing. Codemasters producers on the site confirmed that the studio’s combined brain confidence had matured enough to add a VR mode to F1, thanks to the contributions of those who worked on VR modes to DiRT Rally and Driveclub VR . (Evolution Studios did the latter before Codemasters acquired it in 2016).
The game’s kiosk combined Fanatec’s CSL DD F1 package with a Quest 2 VR headset. Great news, the result strikes the right balance between fidelity and performance, along with considerations for the convenience of virtual reality while navigating F1 directly. The only comfort exception came from the moments when the game’s particle-filled clouds filled my game view, causing the frame rate of my headphones to drop. This problem usually arises after a twisting turn when driving all driving aids off; When I relied on the optional F1 mode for mannequins, all assists, F1 2022 seemed like a fantastic carnival trip.

At some point, the oversaturation of “adventure-seeking” indie games (better known as “Metroidvanias”) has to take its course, right? What else can anyone do to overcome critically acclaimed Hollow Knight, Virgin Axiom, and Cave Story?
While I’m not immediately convinced that Animal Well surpasses the other greats of the genre, my one-hour show has intrigued me very, very much. On the one hand, it has new and beautiful ideas to represent pixel art, thanks to its unique designer, programmer and artist who builds the game engine from scratch and has condensed the entire package so far to a limit of 10 MB. The game’s lighting and physics models are some of the most impressive I’ve ever seen in a 16-bit aesthetic, perhaps even surpassing Noita’s pixelated and chemical reaction madness.
Also, this adventure has clever ideas on how to skip the fight completely. Animal Well asks players to focus on complicated maneuvers, puzzle solving, and the discovery of hidden paths as they unravel the mysteries that hide their lack of dialogue. Instead of wielding weapons, your eight-pixel hero should make the most of items like firecrackers, which illuminate the world in 2D while scaring off potential enemies, and a handy handgun that can be throw in the cracks to catch otherwise untouchable. elements of the world.
The agile controls and pixel art designs of another world have made my demo experience with Animal Well memorable so far, and I look forward to its final release (currently linked to a vague window of “principles of 2023 “).
