Best New Work: This Tony Award looks like it will go to “The Lehman Trilogy,” a fascinating history lesson that chronicles the rise and fall of Lehman Brothers ’financial empire. There are also two dark comedies at stake: Lynn Nottage’s “Clyde’s” is set in a sandwich shop that employs recently imprisoned people; and Martin McDonagh’s “Hangmen” takes place in a bar run by Britain’s second-best executioner just after the country banned the death penalty. The 2022 nominees. The race for the best new musical at the Tony Awards, traditionally the most financially beneficial award, is a wide-ranging six-band competition this year. Here’s a closer look at each nominee:
“MJ.” This biographical jukebox musical follows Michael Jackson as he prepares for a world tour, but avoids allegations of sexual abuse against the pop star.
“Six: The Musical.” This British pop musical about women by Henry VIII mixes 16th century marriage politics with 21st century selfies and shadows in a song between six cheeky divas.
Best New Musical: The most nominated show of the season, “A Strange Loop,” is the favorite to win the major new best musical career. The show, a meta-musical about an aspiring songwriter facing his doubts and demons, garnered 11 Tony nominations. If there’s one upset here, it’s most likely coming from “MJ,” the biographical jukebox musical that follows Michael Jackson as he prepares for a world tour. Also in the mix: “Paradise Square,” which explores changing race relationships – and dance styles – in a Civil War-torn New York neighborhood; “Six”, a British pop musical about the wives of King Henry VIII; “Girl From the North Country,” which uses Bob Dylan’s songs to imagine life in a Minnesota boarding house from the time of the Depression; and “Mr. Saturday Night ”, Billy Crystal’s adaptation of the film of the same name.
Performing Arts: Several well-known performers also received nominations, including Sam Rockwell (“American Buffalo”), Mary-Louise Parker (“How I Learned to Drive”), Billy Crystal (“Mr. Saturday Night”), Hugh Jackman (” The Music Man “), Uzo Aduba (” Clyde’s), Rachel Dratch (“POTUS”), Phylicia Rashad (“Skeleton Crew”), Ruth Negga (“Macbeth”) and Patti LuPone (“Company”).
The races for the best top performers are especially controversial.
