Amazon Prime Video may be one of the largest streaming services out there, but its interface has also lagged far behind the competition in terms of usability. Now, the Amazon Prime Video app is undergoing a massive redesign on Google TV and other platforms.
With a release starting today on Google TV / Android TV, as well as Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV and consoles, Amazon Prime Video has completely revamped its interface. And that has long been expected.
The new Amazon Prime Video app now, not surprisingly, looks a lot like the Netflix and Disney + app. There’s a navigation bar next to the user interface, featured content at the top of the home page, and also a new list of the top ten.
There are now six sections in the app that are listed next to the user interface, which include:
- Search
- at home
- Shop
- Live TV
- Free
- My stuff
These sections are broken down to provide general recommendations, your wish list, purchases, and free content to view as well. Content included with Amazon Prime is marked with a blue check mark, while individually purchased content has a gold shopping bag icon.
Amazon says:
We are introducing a simplified and redesigned main navigation menu that is easily accessible. This helps customers navigate our wide selection, such as movies, TV shows, sports and premium channels, and find what they are looking for quickly and easily. Customers have an easy path to titles included with the Prime subscription, such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Boys and the long-awaited Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. For our living room apps, the new navigation menu has been relocated to the side of the screen to improve access. The application will launch with six main pages: Home, Store, Search, Live TV, Free with ads and My stuff. Customers will also have sub-navigation options to navigate more easily by content or type of offer, for example, “Movies” or “TV Shows” or “Sports” in Home and “Channels” or “Rent or Buy” in the shop.
The new interface feels familiar with other major streaming services and is really just a big update over the previous one, which looked old and cluttered.
Beyond the TV, Amazon is also bringing this new Prime Video interface to Android phones and tablets during this initial release. The web interface, as well as iOS devices, will be renewed “in the coming months.”
