A Category 3-4 atmospheric river hits the BC coast on Thursday, prompting updated warnings from the BC River Forecast Center.
Global BC meteorologist Kristi Gordon said the dangerous part of atmospheric rivers is that they can stop over an area for several days causing heavy rain and mild air.
“This is what we experienced in November 2021, where a combination of heavy rain and a layer of snow that quickly dissolved was off the charts,” he said.
Gordon said that this atmospheric river will not stop in our area for more than 24 hours, as the south coast expects to receive between 20 and 45 millimeters of rain while the interior could receive between 5 and 15 thousand · rain gauges.

The Cariboo Mountains and the surrounding tributaries flowing westward, including the Quesnel and Horsefly rivers, are now under flood watch.
“Rainfall and melting snow across the region have led to a steady rise in rivers draining from the Cariboo Mountains,” BC River Forecast Center staff said.
“There is a significant layer of snow left in the mountains.”
