The best of Broadway will be recognized on Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
The Tony Awards show is presented by Broadway veteran Ariana DeBose, who recently starred in the movie “West Side Story” and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
“A Strange Loop” has the most nominations this year with 11, including one for Best Musical. The show, which follows an aspiring playwright and his dizzying and personified thoughts, won the Pulitzer Prize for Dramaturgy 2020.
Following closely with 10 nominations is the pop musical “MJ”, which takes place during a Michael Jackson tour. He also received 10 “Paradise Square” nominations, a musical that follows the deteriorating relationship between Irish immigrants and blacks in New York in the 19th century.
The last year marked a triumphant, albeit erratic, return to Broadway, which was closed for more than a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Shows began to reopen in September 2021, although subsequent outbreaks forced several shows to cancel performances.
