The sixth full moon of the year will take place later today. Nearly a month after the super-flowering blood moon phenomena in May, this particular full moon will also be a larger supermoon and therefore look bigger and brighter.
A supermoon occurs at the point of the moon’s orbit where it is closest to Earth, also known as a pedigree. Although today represents the peak of the full moon in June, the super strawberry moon will still appear full during the days around it.

The best time to see the strawberry moon
It may seem strange for a full moon to occur during daylight hours, but it will actually reach a maximum at 12.51pm. This is because this is the exact time when the sun and the moon are on opposite sides of the Earth, which is not determined by the time of day.
It will still be visible just after sunset this evening (June 14), so get your binoculars ready. The best time to see it will be at the beginning of the sunrise or sunset, as it will look bigger near the horizon.
How to see the supermoon
If you can’t go out and see the moon in person, there are places that broadcast the event live. The Ceccano Virtual Telescope Project in Italy will include views of the full moon rising over Rome, with the broadcast scheduled for 8.15pm, with more information here.
Why is it called Strawberry Moon?
Although it takes on a pink hue to represent the strawberry color, this is not where the name originated. According to NASA, some Native American tribes referred to the full moon in late spring / early summer as a strawberry moon because it marked the ripening of strawberries “that were in June.”

The full moon of July will occur on July 13 at 7:38 p.m. Also a supermoon, has been classified as a buck moon.
