A man dragged his mother out of bed and hit her head against a wall in a brutal attack on her home.
Daniel Colebourne left Margaret Colebourne “black and white” after a brutal assault on her home earlier this year. The 27-year-old’s actions were so serious that the judge not only imprisoned her but prevented her from contacting her after she told prosecutors she did not want to see him again.
Prosecutor Derek Jones said Colebourne’s mother told police she “felt like she was walking on eggshells” while he was at his home in Bootle. On the morning of April 4 this year. he got angry for no apparent reason when she offered him some breakfast, grabbing the kitchen fridge and pulling it so violently that he walked out the door.

He then left the house but returned and tried to get his mother’s attention by calling for her. Mr Jones said: “She ignored him when she called his name. She went into her bedroom and slapped him hard on the right arm. At that moment she was not angry, You have done it? It hurts’. He said, “I was just kidding.”
Mr Jones said Mrs Colebourne was taking anticoagulants and her son was aware that this would easily bruise him. Despite this, he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her out of bed before leaving. She tried to get her phone to call the police, but he retaliated brutally.
Jones said, “The defendant realized what he was trying to do and went back to the room and hit his head against the wall twice, causing him to start bleeding.” He was left with an 8 cm head wound and a large bruise. Their screams were so loud that the neighbors called the police.
Colebourne himself called an ambulance and originally said the injuries were caused by an accident, but later admitted to injuries and criminal damage. He has multiple previous convictions, including drug driving, assault on his mother, and criminal damages against an ex-partner.
Defending Paul Becker said Colebourne was deeply remorseful and ashamed of what he had done. Appealing to the judge to suspend his sentence in favor of greater support for parole, he said: “Clearly there is a problem of anger that Daniel Colebourne has towards his mother and perhaps, and an illustration through which the court has heard in a different setting. [Colebourne’s conviction against his ex]. ”
Becker said Colebourne was suffering from anxiety and depression and was in a precarious mental state at the time due to the death of his grandfather. Colebourne himself apologized during the hearing, but also tried to question some of the facts heard in court.
Judge David Swinnerton told him he had left his mother “black and blue” and rejected requests for a suspended sentence, saying he had been given opportunities before. Judge Swinnerton said: “You, Mr Colebourne, are a man who cannot control his temper and who is a risk to those around you or in your home environment.”
Colebourne of HMP Altcourse was jailed for 18 months. Judge Swinnerton also granted a five-year restraining order after hearing a statement from his mother stating that “I don’t want him to ever approach me again.”
