PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The Cardinals of St. Louis became the first major league team to hit four homers in a row in the first inning when Nolan Arenado, Nolan Gorman, Juan Yepez and Dylan Carson connected Saturday against Philadelphia.
The Cardinals tied the MLB record for any entry with four in a row. It was the first time they had done so, and the 11th time in the history of the Major League.
After Phillies starter Kyle Gibson got the first two outs, Paul Goldschmidt made a single before Arenado’s two-run shot on the left field on a sliding start to the long ball attack. Arenado’s momentum came one night after he hit the cycle for the second time in his career in the St. Louis defeat. Louis 5-3 against Philadelphia.
Gorman continued to lead a 2-1 cut in the right field seats. Yepez then committed a foul on a 1-2 throw before clearing the fence on the left field to score for the first time since Sept. 19, 2002, when the Cardinals hit three homers in a row.
Carson ended the incredible display of power by connecting with a 1-0 lead that hit the face of the second deck on the right field on the first pitch he saw.
The last team to homer in four consecutive baptisms was the Chicago White Sox, who did so on August 16, 2020 against the Cardinals.
Gibson had allowed just nine homers in 80 1/3 innings entering Saturday.
The home crowd cheered when, after 28 minutes, Lars Nootbaar’s charge up the middle resulted in the keeper making one of his best saves of the day.
