The City Council cancels around 1,500 tickets issued by 2 speed cameras by mistake

About 1,500 speeding tickets issued this summer are being canceled by the city because it says speed cameras at two different locations were incorrectly calibrated.

All tickets issued at both locations from July 1 to Aug. 15 must be canceled by the end of September, a City of Ottawa memo to council said Wednesday afternoon.

Both locations are in school zones with speed limits that change when school is not in session. From September to June the speed limit is 40km/h from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and outside of these hours, including all summer, the speed limit is 50km/h.

Due to an administrative error, the council said tickets continued to be issued this summer as if the speed limit were 40km/h.

As of Aug. 16, the problem was corrected, the memo said.

Both locations are on Alta Vista Drive between Ayers Avenue and Ridgemont Avenue and on Abbott Street East between Moss Hill Trail and Shea Road.

The City says that vehicle owners who have received a ticket will receive a cancellation notice by post.

“They are asked not to pay their fines. Those who have paid will be refunded the full amount of the fine by the end of October,” the note said.

It says no action is required by the tickets to initiate a refund.
