A man who died after being hit by a van was doing work for the town hall at the time. The 50-year-old environmental services team member was hit by a vehicle and a trailer from Stoke-on-Trent City Hall in Canal Lane, Longport, this morning.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has now opened an investigation into the circumstances of the crash, while the council and police are also conducting their own investigations.

In a statement, the council said it was “completely devastated” by the “tragic and fatal incident” involving an employee.

A Stoke-on-Trent City Council spokesman said: The incident occurred while a small team was working on land off Tunstall’s main road.

“All our thoughts are with the family, co-workers and our wider family of employees. We are all completely devastated. The circumstances of what happened are being thoroughly investigated and we will support all agencies that are involved in doing so. “

Ambulances and police had rushed to the scene shortly before 11 a.m. The West Midlands ambulance service was called at 10.43am to report a collision between a van and a pedestrian. Two ambulances and a paramedic have been sent to the scene.

A West Midlands ambulance service spokeswoman said: “On arrival, crews found a man. He was assessed and had suffered life-threatening injuries. He received advanced life support from ambulance staff. “Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the ambulance staff, it became clear that nothing more could be done to save him and the death was confirmed. The driver of the van did not need treatment. “.

A Staffordshire police spokesman said: “Officers attended as well as paramedics. Upon arrival, a man was found to have been involved in a collision with a van and a trailer. Unfortunately, a man of 50 years was declared dead by paramedics shortly.Formal identification will be made in due course.

“The man’s relatives have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers at this difficult time. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed and consultations are continuing.”
