As the cost of fresh produce continues to rise, the price of a very common vegetable has caused outrage and confusion.
A Reddit user has shared the latest example of the crazy cost of Australian products, with a supermarket trying to sell green beans for $ 39.99 a kilo.
Amid growing concern over rising product prices, Reddit user thegoosedrawsnear shared the photo along with the caption: “I see your $ 6 cucumber and I grow green beans for you.”
The sign announcing green beans, also known as round beans, for $ 39.99 / kg, appears to be from a Harris Farm Markets, which is a medium-sized grocery chain operating in NSW and Queensland.
In response to the post, many users thought the price must be a misspelling.
“Well, these used to cost $ 5 per kg during the simplest times. It’s time to regurgitate my food so I can re-eat it and save on expenses,” read one comment.
Another said, “$ 40 / kg for green beans! I bought pork belly today for $ 19 a kilo. I bought fresh salmon for $ 28 / kg. WTF. Frozen green beans would be about $ 5 / kg. Ridiculous. ”
The original poster also added that they saw someone buying the beans for the advertised price. Despite this, Harris Farms has the product listed online at a reduced cost of $ 29.98 / kg. News.com.au has contacted the grocery chain for further comments.
In comparison, it seems that Coles Online offers vegetables for $ 10.90 / kg. Although there are currently no stocks, beans will cost you the same amount in Woolworths.
“I was actually behind someone on the record who was buying them while complaining about the price,” they wrote.
Iceberg lettuce has also experienced a 300% price increase in recent months. While many joked that it is not the variety of lettuce on offer, photos of the item have been sold for up to $ 11.99 per head.
Rising prices have even prompted fast food outlets such as KFC, Subway, Red Rooster and Oporto to introduce a mixture of lettuce and cabbage for their burgers and other products.
Another Reddit user also shared a poster announcing $ 5.99 cucumbers, with people baffled by the high price.
One commenter said, “99 percent water … expensive.”
“I’m not paying $ 6 for a cucumber just to ignore it in the fridge until it’s liquid,” another said.
Although the war in Ukraine and the continuing supply chain problems caused by Covid have affected the price of things like gasoline and mineral resources, Australia’s recent rains and unprecedented floods can take up a large part of the blame for rising product costs.
The devastating floods and unprecedented rains earlier this year in the Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Stanthorpe in Queensland have wiped out entire crops.
“The reason prices are so expensive is because there’s not much stock around. Farmers who should harvest between 100 and 200 pallets a day may be reduced to 10 pallets,” the general manager of 9News told Velisha Farms, Catherine Velisha.
Officially, the Consumer Price Index reports that the cost of fruits and vegetables grew by 6.7% between the March quarters of 2021 and 2022, and global inflation rose by 2.1% to 5, 1%.
