🌞 Hi, Hadlee here once again! I just found out that Coheed and Cambria released a new album a couple of weeks ago. So I know what I’m going to hear this week.
Asus ROG Phone 6: More Than a Gaming Phone?
Robert Triggs / Android Authority
Asus has finally launched the ROG Phone 6, the latest device in its long line of gaming phones. It certainly looks like a phone beast for gamers when they look at the spec sheet and feature list. Between the new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, the 6,000 mAh battery, the capacitive shoulder triggers and the 165 Hz OLED display, there’s a lot to like. It even has a 3.5mm port! There is also a Pro model, equipped with more RAM and a secondary rear screen.
What is the trap, then?
- We posted the ROG Phone 6 Pro review yesterday and my colleague Rob Triggs thought the company did its best for mobile gamers.
- However, he noted that the Pro model was very difficult to sell for € 1,299 (~ $ 1,331) in Europe.
- At this price, expect some features like wireless charging, a telephoto lens, and an IP68 rating. But these features are missing here.
- Now, we don’t normally expect premium badge extras on gaming phones.
- After all, the goal of a gaming phone is, well … play! So resources are spent on chipset, cooling, things like shoulder triggers, a big battery and software.
- But your typical 2022 gaming phones like the Red Magic 7 and Black Shark 5 Pro series cost $ 800. It’s much easier to excuse the missing premium extras at this price.
Gaming phones do not exist in isolation
- The ROG Phone 6 Pro is about $ 500 more expensive than its rivals. This puts it in the same territory as the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
- Yes, you miss renewed silicon, capacitive shoulder triggers, and fantastic sustained performance (and a 3.5mm port), but the S22 Ultra is still a good choice for modern gaming.
- The Samsung phone also offers wireless charging, a large rear camera system (including a 10x periscope camera) and an IP68 rating.
- Asus also offers only two years of security and operating system updates. For a phone that costs ~ $ 1,300 and has 18GB of RAM.
- Samsung opts for four operating system updates and five years of security patches. Even other players like OnePlus and Xiaomi make longer upgrade commitments.
Think of the standard ROG Phone 6
- Fortunately, the standard ROG Phone 6 is also an option. It is available at £ 899 or € 999 much nicer.
- It is still a bit expensive compared to rival gaming phones and online with the flagship phones.
- But these mentioned omissions are much easier to excuse when you pay € 300 less than the Pro version.
- That said, Asus has not yet established partnerships with carriers for these phones.
- I guess your online strategy is working well given the niche nature of these devices.
Roundup
🍏 The EU has just hit Big Tech again: these are the newest rules: the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act are bringing the fight to people like Google and Apple (Android Authority).
Minions: The Rise of Gru is already in theaters, but it turns out that some theaters prohibit young people in costumes from attending these screenings. It sounds very strange, but it turns out that groups of teenagers dress in formal attire to attend the film as part of a #gentleminions trend. Universal Pictures even endorsed the trend with a tweet last week.
Unfortunately, the BBC reports that some of these teenagers were making noise, throwing things, abusing staff and getting up during screenings. Some film representatives noted that they suffered a major economic impact as they had to make refunds to families and other people affected by the riots.
Have a great day and respect your fellow filmmakers!
