The driver collides with the overpass and sinks into Highway 1 below

Police say a driver is lucky to have only minor injuries after his car crashed from a high step, almost landing on Highway 1 on Thursday.

The crash happened around 8:15 p.m. on the Grandview over Burnaby overpass.

Police said a 40-year-old woman passed through the railing and sank about 12 feet. The images of the scene show the railing completely broken in a stretch and sloping towards the road below.

The vehicle landed on its wheels, not far from highway traffic.

The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and police told CTV News Vancouver that they had never seen anything like the crash.

Researchers said deterioration is not believed to be a factor.
