Burnaby RCMP says a driver is lucky to have escaped with minor injuries after his vehicle veered off a roadway on Thursday night.
The driver lost control of a white SUV while driving on Grandview Highway around 8:15 p.m., crashed into a railing and fell a few feet on the highway, according to Burnaby RCMP chief. Michael Kalanj.
The SUV landed on all four wheels on the grassy median that separates the eastbound and westbound lanes. The driver, a 49-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with injuries that did not endanger her life.
Kalanj said things could have been much worse.
“Landing on all four wheels in an upright position between east and west [lanes on] Highway 1 is amazing, “he said.” The driver of the vehicle is fine … he’s very lucky. “
Kalanj said the SUV will be towed when it is safe to do so.
The crash closed all eastbound lanes for about an hour, causing significant traffic congestion.
Two lanes reopened around 9:15 p.m., according to DriveBC.
Burnaby’s RCMP remained in place to investigate. Railing repairs are underway.
The RCMP does not believe there is alcohol or drugs, and has not ruled out speed or time as possible contributing factors.
