The evil assassin who murdered Helen McCourt dies taking the final resting place in the grave

Helen McCourt’s evil assassin has died, bringing her last resting place to the grave.

Pub owner Ian Simms was jailed for life, with a minimum sentence of 16 years in prison, for the murder of 22-year-old Helen in February 1988.

Simms strangled Helen as she was returning home from work in Billinge, but has never revealed where her body is.

The 64-year-old man was released in February 2020 after the Parole Board declared him fit for freedom before his death over the weekend.

No official cause of death has yet been given, but the Justice Ministry confirmed to the Mirror that he had died.

Simms killed Helen in Billinge, Merseyside, in 1988 and was convicted of murder based on fingerprint evidence the following year.

Helen was last seen getting off a bus near her home. A shout was later heard from the George and Dragon pub run by the father of two Simms.

Days before the murder, he had banned Helen after arguing with another client. He was heard using obscene language towards her and telling her how much he hated her.

Simms had previously made sexual advances towards Helen and Helen was thought to have discovered that he was having an affair with a 21-year-old woman.

Helen’s determined mother, Marie, 77, fought for Helen’s Law and in March was passed by unopposed ministers.

It implicates probation judges’ legal obligation to consider non-disclosure of information about murderers and pedophiles, and the Justice Ministry says such offenders “should expect to be behind bars longer.”

But Simms was released on leave a month before it went into effect.

Marie returned to court to try to send Simms to her cell, but the High Court judges gave the decision to the parole board and ordered her to pay her legal bill.
