Residents of a Brisbane nursing home have been shaken after a fire ravaged the facility.
The community praises the actions of the heroic staff of the Bayside Lodge nursing home in Lota.
Neighbor Cherry Krane said she saw “large red flames coming out of the ceiling” as teams struggled to put out the fire.

“Credit to these people who were saved and then to the fires who did an amazing job of containing that fire to prevent it from spreading to nearby residents,” he said.
Thanks to smoke alarms and quick staff, all 28 residents and their caregivers escaped unharmed, experts said.
“It’s a highlight of the good work that the staff did to get people of different ages, mobility issues and disabilities out of the building,” said David Beutel of the Queensland Emergency and Fire Services.

Residents and their loved ones are still in a state of shock after losing everything. Some are still confused about what happened.
“They don’t understand that they can’t go home because the house is no longer here. It breaks my heart,” said Tracey Smith, a family member who lived there.
Donations of clothes, bedding and other personal items are now being collected.
