The fire ravaged Scottish high school as the building evacuated as smoke rose into the air

A Scottish institute has been evacuated after a fire destroyed it with smoke rising into the air.

Emergency services rushed to Hawick High School on Buccleuch Road in the town of Borders shortly before 3pm on Friday 10 June.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent two aircraft and firefighters are currently at the scene.

Teams are working to contain and extinguish the fire which is understood to be the result of a solar panel fire.

Police confirmed that the building had been evacuated and that the incident is not considered suspicious.

There are no reports of any casualties.

A spokesman said: “We were notified at 2.47pm on Friday 10 June of reports of a fire at Hawick High School on Buccleuch Road in the city.

“Operations control has mobilized two devices and firefighters are currently working to contain and extinguish the fire. There are no casualties. “

A Scottish police spokesman said: “Officers were called to report a fire at a Buccleuch Road, Hawick premises around 3:05 pm on Friday, June 10, 2022.

“A solar panel caught fire and went out quickly.

“The building was evacuated and is not being treated as a suspect.”
