The five-year-old Sea Of Thieves captaincy update is coming in July

Sea of Thieves will finally release its Captaincy update with the arrival of the seventh season of the game in July.

Five years in the making, the Captaincy update has been on Rare’s to-do list since before even the release of Sea of Thieves. The upgrade allows players to buy their own ship, name it and decorate it with the loot collected in their adventures.

Originally, the idea was for players to store their ship in the hideout of the pirate legend under the taverns of each of the advanced places in the game. Players will now use the game’s newest building, located on the spare dock of each advanced site, to purchase and equip their new ship. Players can also use this new building to quickly deliver their loot if they do not have time to transport everything on foot along the pier.

The Sea of Thieves Captaincy upgrade will allow players to live the pirate life more fully with a dedicated and persistent ship that will be waiting for them on any server they log in to. It opens the door to even more player stories, building a recognizable ship and a legend that accompanies it.

The captaincy was put in the background after Sea of Thieves moved from the Unity engine to Unreal during development. Other functions (and issues) had to take precedence. It’s only been a couple of years since Rare started implementing features that were present in the game’s Unity build when it was abandoned. Breakable sticks, wheels, and goats, for example, took years to arrive, but were considered a vital component of building Unity. It’s great to see Rare still working with the ideas he had in his original design. Five years after what Rare predicted would be a ten-year life cycle, one wonders what else light could see.

Season 7 of Sea of Thieves was recently delayed due to technical issues related to a recent update, but will begin in late July.
