The Greens win the Brisbane seat, says ABC election analyst Antony Green

The Greens have won the Brisbane seat, says ABC election analyst Antony Green.

Stephen Bates will become the Greens’ fourth MP in the 47th Parliament, after the party also won the Griffith and Ryan seats, and retained the Melbourne seat.

Absent votes counted today have confirmed the 29-year-old retail worker’s advantage over Labor candidate Madonna Jarrett.

Jarrett wrote on Facebook that he was “clear we won’t cross the line.”

“Earlier this afternoon, I called Stephen Bates to congratulate him on his successful campaign. I wish him all the best for his next term,” he said.

It is the third seat the Greens have won in the Queensland capital.

Brisbane and Ryan voters were taken from the National Liberal Party, and Griffith from Labor.

The Greens now have four seats in the House of Representatives with the party still in the running for Macnamara’s Melbourne seat, although Labor is currently ahead of the electorate.

Labor currently has 75 seats in the lower house, one less than most.

Macnamara, Gilmore and Deakin remain in doubt.
