Public health in the Halton region says it has confirmed the first case of smallpox in the area.
The health unit says the individual is being isolated at home and all contacts have been alerted.
Dr. Hamidah Meghani, the local health doctor, says most people with monkeypox will have mild symptoms, but children, pregnant women and immunocompromised people have a higher risk of serious illness.
Toronto Public Health says there are eight confirmed cases in the city, 16 that were negative and 17 more cases under investigation.
Health officials say anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has smallpox can spread the virus.
The Quebec Department of Health said Tuesday that the province has a total of 90 confirmed cases of the disease.
