A father who died after rescuing children trapped in a swell on a Welsh beach has been honored.
Hywel Morgan, 47, helped rescue a group of children who were struggling in the water at Poppit Sands, St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire.
Dyfed-Powys police said an air ambulance was called to the scene around 8:40 p.m. Friday.
A spokesman for the force said: “Tragically, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, local man Hywel Morgan died after being recovered from the sea.”
Two children were taken to hospital for follow-up.
Tributes have been paid to Mr Morgan, who has been described as a “devoted and loving father”.
In a statement, his family said: “Hyw was a hero. Despite our grief and pain, we are comforted that he selflessly tried to prevent others from losing their lives.
“Hyw was a selfless person who always devoted his time to others. He was a devoted and loving father and was loved and respected by all who knew him.
“As a family, now we would like to have time to cry and we would ask for privacy to do so.”
