The Honda Civic Type R 2023 has a toned-down look and fine-tuned looks

After even teasing him, Honda has finally revealed the 2023 Honda Civic Type R. Well, most revealed it, anyway. We still don’t know how many horsepower it has or what was done with its chassis, other than that they have been “improved”. What we do know is that the latest version of Honda’s most popular hatchback is said to be more powerful than ever. It also looks more mature, which was an easy bar to erase because its predecessor looked like something from the Japanese anime series Gundam Wing.

R-acy and R-streined appearance

It’s no secret that the outgoing Civic Type R had a beloved or hated style. For better or worse, the new CTR does not provoke such strong reactions. However, we think it looks wonderful, with just a handful of bold add-ons that don’t ruin the otherwise restricted design. Of course, there are still some fake vents for vanity, but the ones behind the front wheels are now real. The rear spoiler is still a prominent feature, but it is no longer a caricature of boys runners.

Like the starting version, the new Civic Type R has a unique body. It is still only offered as a hatchback (by tradition) and has bell-shaped fenders that distinguish it from the smaller Civics. Honda also offers you wider rear doors that you won’t find in the normal hatch. The side beds are another unique touch, and at the back is a black diffuser with the Type R brand triple-tipped central exhaust.

Return of the side wall

Easy to overlook, but very important, is the new combination of R-rated Civic wheels and tires. The latter mounted on 20-inch wheels with 245/30 summer rubber that had thin sidewalls like a pancake. . Fortunately, a smaller set of 19-inch lightweight rollers with thicker side walls is now standard. Don’t worry, though; Honda only reduces the diameter of the wheel. The CTR’s contact patch is now noticeably wider thanks to its new 265/30 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires.

Normally, the big news with a brand new Civic Type R would be its performance specifications. Unfortunately, they are kept under lock and key until Honda reveals them closer to the car launch this fall. Fortunately, we have some hard facts about what’s under the hood to hold us back. Its power to determine comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Again, the engine mate in lap times is a six-speed manual transmission with a rev adjustment function.

Honda says it will be the “most powerful Type R ever.” The American version previously had 306 horsepower; those in the markets of Europe and Japan had 316 horses. Is it safe to say that the Civic Type R 2023 will have at least 317? The way Honda put it makes us think that might be the case, but corporate marketing is a fickle friend, so we’ll have to wait and see. This also happens with its suspension and steering. Somehow they are improved. That’s all we know at the moment.

Carpet treatment R-ed

Inside, the car’s specific R-type front seats come in any color you want as long as it’s bright red. We have had the opportunity to sit in these new buckets and can report that they are very comfortable. The model with US specifications will also have red carpet for the first time, a treatment that was previously only seen in other markets. At the moment, we are not sure if Honda will offer a black carpet or not.

The rest of the interior of the hot hatchback is what you’ll find in the top finishes of the normal Civic hatchback. That means a 9.0-inch touchscreen entertainment information system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless, two-zone automatic climate control, and a fully digital indicator cluster. In type R, the latter shows a unique design in the unit model + R. Includes shift lights, gear position and a race car-inspired graphic for the tachometer.

Honda has not said how much the 2023 Civic Type R will cost, but it is expected to surpass the price of the 2021 model, which started at $ 38,910.
