Yankees 10 Blue Jays 3
This was no fun at all.
We were winning for a while. Gabriel Moreno singled to Alejandro Kirk (who took a throw-in in the opponent’s half of the field) to the third inning.
Ross Stripling first threw a 3 up 3 down. In the second, he started the entrance with a walk and a single but he blocked the runners. In the third, two individuals but were stranded again.
Luck ran out in the fourth. Gleytor Torres ‘singles and doubles scored the Yankees’ first run. A ground-out scored the second and that was all for Ross. 5 hits and 2 balls in 3.2 innings, but his 84-throw count tells the story. He went into a lot of deep counting even when everything was going well.
Trent Thornton got the last out of the quarter. and that was the end of the fun for him too. Fifth was Giancarlo Stanton’s hitter, DJ LeMahieu’s homer, Torrez’s double, Joey Gallo’s double. That was the end for Thornton. The first time this season he gave up more than 2 throws in one outing (he gave two twice, the last one was on May 7, so it went well until tonight). He entered the match with an effectiveness of 2.59 and left with 4.38.
Trevor Richards came in and had no choice. His time was alone, laid back, intentional walk (Aaron Judge so understandable), laid back (Josh Donaldson) and then a grand slam by Anthony Rizzo.
And it was 10-2.
Casey Lawrence cleaned up and gave us 4 good tickets. He allowed a 2-run homer in the ninth (by Gallo), but saved us from using a few more arms. Your reward? They will most likely return him to Buffalo. It’s a shame, I’m sure he’ll enjoy the major league money for a few more days. But he has shown himself well and will return. He threw 52 times.
In attack, we did little. 5 hits, 3 of them from Moreno, who led in 2 of the 3 throws. Kirk’s solo home run produced the other race.
We had 0 holes from Springer (who seems lost on the plate), Espinal, Guerrero (he had a walk and our 2 most hit balls, a liner caught in CF and a ground ball), Hernández (walk), Gurriel and Biggio (walking).
Jays of the Game: Moreno (.106 WPA) and I give Lawrence one so he can go back to Buffalo and remember when he put on Aaron Judge.
Suckage: Thornton (-.278, 1 out, 5 hits, 5 wins, 2 homers). And all 0 forums can share a prize.
Tomorrow we have Alek Manoah (8-1, 1.67) against Jameson Tallon (7-1, 2.93). It is a 3:00 east departure.
