The king of women should not be played with the first trailer

Sony’s upcoming historical action epic, The Woman King, by director Gina Prince-Bythewood, tells the story of the women’s army that consolidated the status of the Dahomey Kingdom as a player of militaristic power until falling of the twentieth century. While the legacies of Dahomey’s Amazons have survived in fantasies like Marvel’s Black Panther, The Woman King will make people understand why they became legends judging by the film’s first trailer.

The Woman King tells the story of Nanisca (Viola Davis), general of the Amazons of King Ghezo (John Boyega), and Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), a young woman recently recruited into the kingdom’s famous army of women warriors. Like Dora Milaje of Black Panther, the Dahomey Amazons are skilled and deadly agents of the state, and the trailer for The Woman King highlights how Nanisca and her fellow soldiers first realized the white aliens with the intention of to enslave all of Africa. While the weapons of the aliens pose a threat important enough to pause Ghezo, fear is a strange concept for Nanisca: a woman willing to die for her king and country.

The Woman King also stars Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Adrienne Warren and Jayme Lawson. The film hits theaters on September 16, 2022.
