If this Mississauga mall had been built, it would have been the largest mall in the world at the time.

Imagine a $ 1.5 billion amusement park and mall just south of Pearson Airport.

Well, it almost happened!

In the 1980s, Triple Five Development, the company that built the West Edmonton Mall, formerly known as the world’s largest shopping mall, made a proposal for a leisure, shopping complex in the city of Mississauga. and “Fantasyworld” recreation.

The entire project would be 10 million square feet in Mississauga. Just to compare what 10 million square feet are like, here are some comparisons.

Square One Mall: 1,700,000 square feet The Rogers Center: 479,160 square feet

Fantasyworld was to occupy a million and a half square feet and would include an underwater promenade, water park and wave pool, marine animal theater, the world’s largest amusement park, zoo, pavilion the size of the NHL, interactive space museum, gardens, art. exhibitions, a famous sports pavilion, 20 choreographed water and fire fountains, 26 movie screens, a concert stage, an international-themed hotel with 1,250 rooms and “the best shops and boutiques around the world.”

The site map showed how massive this project was, as it stretches from Highway 401 in the north to Eglinton in the south.

Theme “neighborhoods” full of live entertainment, shopping and dining would include Bourbon Street in New Orleans and Piccadilly Circus in London. Little Italy would have had real gondolas crossing inland canals, while the replica of the Left Bank of Paris (La Rive Gauche) would include a live theater.

It looks amazing, unless you’re a local mall, like Square One, or an area theme park, like Canada’s Wonderland.

They both talked about the damage that Fantasyworld would do to their business.

Mississauga’s rejection of the proposed first site led developers to explore other lands in the area, but eventually abandoned its proposal. The “Fantastic World” of Mississauga was not to be.
