Something to look forward to: Windows users have wanted Microsoft to bring tabs to File Explorer for years. The company is stabbing you in the latest preview of Windows 11 Insider. Hopefully this time it reaches the public.
File Explorer tabs form the main new feature introduced in version 25136 of Windows 11 Insider Preview this week. As users would expect, the feature works similarly to web browser tabs, allowing users to switch between different folders from the top row of File Explorer. Evidence that the much-requested capacity was arriving first appeared in pre-March versions. Compilation 25136 also provided quick access to the left navigation panel.
Microsoft last tried to give the File Explorer tabs in 2018, when they appeared in a Windows 10 Insider preview called “Sets.” I was supposed to use a single window to organize not only the tabs in File Explorer, but also other programs. However, the company eventually removed the feature before it reached general Windows users.

Those who want tabs in File Explorer without installing Windows 11 or Previews have many third-party alternatives. Files is an open source application that tries to look more like the rest of the Windows 11 user interface while offering tabs, tags, and other additional features. Another option is RX Explorer, which has a unique visual aesthetic.
The new preview version of Windows 11 also offers dynamic widgets on the taskbar. They can display constantly updated information about things like weather, sporting events, or finances.
