A Wythenshawe recycling center had to be closed and evacuated after a “grenade” was found at the site. Emergency services went down to the Longley Lane recycling center in Sharston after being called to report the finding of a grenade at the site around 4pm today (June 24).
An hour later, Recycle for Greater Manchester told residents on social media that the recycling center had been “temporarily closed due to an emergency incident”. Eyewitnesses reported seeing workers outside the tip while a large police presence was in attendance.
Greater Manchester police say their officers went to the scene and were able to remove the suspicious device. Firefighters have also been sent to the recycling center to support the police handling the incident.

A GMP spokesman said: “Around 4pm on Friday (June 24, 2022) we received a report that a grenade had been found at a recycling center in Longley Lane, Wythenshawe. attended and the device was withdrawn “.
A spokesman for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: “At 5.45pm on Friday 24 June 2022, two firefighters from Wythenshawe Fire Station attended a recycling center on Longley Lane, Wythenshawe. after reports of a suspicious article. Firefighters supported police at the scene and attended for about an hour and 15 minutes. “
