Maserati has continued its modern renaissance with the world premiere of the M20 Cielo, a roadster version of the MC20 coupe. The move was not exactly a surprise. When the Italian carmaker launched the MC20 in 2020, it made it clear that the platform would also support roadster and electric variants.

The highlight of the elegant Cielo’s design is the lack of a fixed ceiling. In its place is a retractable hard hood that opens and closes in just 12 seconds. The hard cover is equipped with a state-of-the-art electrochromic glass panel that can be instantly transformed from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button.

Impressively, the MC20 Cielo weighs 65 kg more than the coupe. This extra volume helps to provide additional rigidity with little compromise on handling and performance.

Maserati had to modify the design of the roadster to accommodate the retractable roof, of course. The sleek Trident vents on the back of the MC20 coupe are gone, replaced by a matte titanium Trident sticker. The engine air inlets have also taken on a new position. Fortunately, however, the signature butterfly doors have been preserved, possibly part of what makes the MC20 look so sleek.

The powertrain remains unchanged, and the MC20 Cielo is powered by the same ingenious Nettuno bi-turbo engine designed by Maserati for the coupe. The V6 produces 621 hp at 7,500 rpm and 538 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm, all powered on the rear wheels by an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. According to Maserati, this is enough to drive the MC20 Cielo at 60 mph (96 km / h) in about 3.0 seconds, and at a top speed of only 200 mph (320 km / h) if you find a speed long enough. road.

Maserati will also be offering a special release edition of PrimaSerie when the MC20 Cielo goes on sale. It will be limited to just 60 cars, all finished with a new unique three-layer metallic color known as Acquamarina, a clever combination of pastel gray with a bit of iridescent aquamarine.

There is no official word on prices. However, the MC20 coupe starts at $ 212,000, and the spider variant can reasonably be expected to have a great premium. The MC20 Cielo will find a home in the mid-engined supercar market among rivals such as the Hurricane Spyder and the McLaren 720S Spider.
