“Thank God there was no one on the pavement,” said the pub manager

Bottlescrew Bill’s Pub will likely be forced to close two of its five patios for the rest of the season after a van destroyed them in an accident.

No one was injured in the collision between two vehicles around 10.40am on Thursday. Calgary police had few details, except to say a vehicle collided with the minivan, sending it into the yards.
Bottlescrew Bill’s has been a mainstay at 140 10th Ave. SW for 40 years along with its restaurant, Buzzards, which recently retired and became a microbrewery.
Geoff Allan, general manager of Bottlescrew Bill’s, said there was no damage estimate as of Thursday afternoon.
“Thank God there was no one on the sidewalk, and I think the staff had already swept and cleaned that area adjacent to our premises as they normally do in the morning,” he said.
Staff members were inside preparing for the 11:30 a.m. opening when the van crashed through the pub’s street patio and into the 10th Avenue patio. In the afternoon the demolition had already begun.
Allan says the watering hole still has a back patio, flower patio and main patio in operation, but the loss of both patios to the crash will take about 50 seats out of operations.
“It will have a significant impact on our business,” he said.
The brewery also suffered two cracked windows. The pub was still open on Thursday and will remain open until repairs are carried out.
