The motorcyclist was left in critical condition after an alleged collision in South Australia

A motorcyclist is fighting for his life after a vehicle collided with his bicycle near the Barossa Valley in South Australia, and the driver allegedly fled the scene.

Police said the 40-year-old motorcyclist was hit by the ute, which was towing a trailer on the Thiele Highway on the outskirts of Kapunda, shortly before 6pm on Sunday.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses who had initially stopped to help said the driver of the car quickly unhooked the trailer and left.

Police said they were looking for the bus driver, who is believed to have been a man about 20 years old or later, during the night, but could not find him.

Authorities have released a photo of the vehicle and trailer involved in the alleged collision.

He was spotted on the road at Eudunda Road House 30 minutes before the crash and traveling down Kupunda Highway moments before the crash.

Shaup Hills, a Kupunda local, said he passed the ute on the way home.

“He was in my lane. Thank God he was on the left, otherwise it would be me who hit first,” he said.

Witness Sarah Shanahan told 9News that her husband ran to the scene to help the injured man.

“There were already emergency services everywhere,” Ms. Shanahan said.

Police are still searching for the driver.

Shanahan said the whole incident has left her upset.

“It makes me feel sick. Where’s your morale?” she said.

“When you know you’ve hit someone, parents and helpers in any way possible.”
