The murder investigation began when a man died after an attack early in the morning

A man has been killed during a riot in Lanark in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Peter Kirkwood was pronounced dead at the scene of the attack on Mousebank Road at around 1.55am.

Emergency services rushed in but were unable to save the 24-year-old who had been mortally wounded after being seriously assaulted.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene but has been released pending further investigation.

The local community has been assured that there will be a significant police presence in the area as they seek to catch the person responsible and establish the circumstances.

Investigating agents are also asking for the public’s help in locating the killer.

Detective Chief Inspector Bob Williamson, of the main investigation team, said: “Our thoughts are very much with Peter’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Extensive police investigations are underway and we will have a continued police presence in the area.

“I would like to assure the local community that everything is being done to locate the person responsible.

“I would also ask anyone who was in the Mousebank Road area in the early hours of Saturday and who has seen or heard a disturbance, or has witnessed anything suspicious, to contact us.

“Anyone with a private CCTV, dashboard camera or any other footage they believe can help with the investigation is asked to pass on anything relevant to us.
