If you want to find a cover for Justin Bieber’s current situation, just ask Mike Shoreman.

Like Bieber, Shoreman developed Ramsay Hunt Syndrome a few years ago.

A motivational speaker and author (from the best-selling Diaries of The Unbalanced Paddleboarder: Crash and RISE), Shoreman believes that Bieber’s diagnosis will provide much-needed awareness of the disease and its consequences, which, not surprisingly, may include a paralyzing depression. .

“This has helped people understand what you’re going through and what you’re living with,” Shoreman said Saturday.

Shoreman has been rooting for Bieber since details of his illness were made public, tweeting messages of support after the recording star posted his Instagram video on the subject.

Bieber showed fans in the video how Ramsay Hunt Syndrome has affected one side of his face.

Meanwhile, Shoreman has appeared in these pages several times this summer as he tries to paddle across the five Great Lakes in a fundraiser for Jack.org, a youth mental health charity.

He successfully crossed Lake Erie a few weeks ago, becoming the first person with a physical disability to do so.

Saturday was supposed to be the day Shoreman boarded Lake Huron, one of the most difficult lake crossings.

But their hopes were dashed and their plans were delayed when the escort boat blew up an engine.

Shoreman spoke from Harbor Beach, Michigan, where he hoped to leave, and where a call has been made for another boat and for any other help that people are willing to offer. (There is a GoFundMe to help cover the hard costs of lake crossings.)

But even in his worst day, Shoreman had kind words for Justin Bieber. He believes that the disease was detected very early in the case of the singer and this is very hopeful.

Still, “I feel terrible for him. I feel really bad. I wrote a book about it and I’d love to put it in Justin Bieber’s hands.

“I personally have been in touch to offer support and encouragement. It is devastating.

“If I can help you in any way …”

Shoreman suffered from Ramsay Hunt Syndrome about four years ago and turned his life upside down. The skilled water sportsman had a paddleboard company and a great life and everything went his way when he got sick.

He lost his sense of balance. His ability to speak, see and hear was drastically altered. One side of his face collapsed, and with it, his ability to show emotion.

He suffered from depression as a side effect.

Shoreman reunited and decided to return, making the crossings of the lake as a way to raise awareness about the disease and the state of mental health care of young people in our province.

To date, his paddleboarding efforts have raised $ 50,000 from a $ 250,000 goal for Jack.org.
