The personal information of California gun owners exposed in a data breach

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – Californians with a hidden transportation permit may have disclosed their personal information in a data breach.

The California Department of Justice on Monday launched a new website with the goal of making gun information more transparent.

This information included the names, ages, addresses, and license types of those with concealed weapons permits.

These are people who are licensed to carry a gun in public, as long as it is not visible, where legally permitted.

The DOJ closed parts of its website once it became aware of the breach.

“It’s worrying at any time that specific information is released to the public,” says Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims. “Of course, what we tell the public all the time is to protect your personal information.”

Mims says it’s also important for these gun owners to make sure their home is safe, as home addresses were part of the breach.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone to find out that their identity was compromised in this data breach to report online here.
