The RCMP confirmed on Tuesday that three people had died in a tragic collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near Sorrento.

Sgt. Barry Kennedy, of Chase’s RCMP, says a 51-year-old Sorrento man heading east in a sedan and a 60- and 67-year-old husband and wife from Blind Bay traveling to Sorrento to the west in an SUV, they died in the crash. .

“Initial indications from witnesses (are) that the eastbound vehicle crossed the solid double line and collided head-on with the westbound vehicle,” Kennedy says.

Sgt. BC RCMP Janelle Shoihet said in a press release that police arrived to find that paramedics had already determined that the occupants of the two vehicles had died at the scene.

A BC Road Patrol collision reconstructor was called in to collaborate in the investigation, which closed the road for several hours.

The collision occurred around 1 pm at block 400 of the road.

“Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy,” Kennedy said.

The accident is still under investigation and Kennedy says it is too early to say whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
