Sony opened the live broadcast of the state of the game on Thursday by announcing the long-rumored and often leaked Resident Evil 4 Remake. Although the short trailer did not show much in the way of the game, it did show several locations and characters of the game and, most importantly, a release date: March 24, 2023.
Most surprising and predictable is that the new Resident Evil 4 looks better visually than its 2005 counterpart. During the one-minute trailer, we see the protagonist Leon Kennedy, the antihero Ada Wong, Ashley Graham, Luis and brief views of antagonists Osmund Saddler and Bitores Mendez. The trailer also shows a quick look at Salazar Castle and the iconic village from the beginning of RE4 and the villains who inhabit them. The voiceover seems to indicate that the story of the game has expanded and will act as a more direct sequel to Resident Evil 2, which also stars Leon as the protagonist.
The trailer ends with a brief explanation that virtual reality content is also in development for Resident Evil 4.

This is just the latest in the long-running series of Resident Evil remakes, which, if you’re right, starts all the way to GameCube with the 1996 remake of the original game. In 2019, publisher and developer Capcom released a remake of Resident Evil 2, which was followed by a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis in 2020. And if you’re technical, this is actually the second remake of Resident Evil 4 in so many years – kind of. Last year, Capcom partnered with developer Armature Studios on the excellent Resident Evil 4 VR.
