The risk of storms spreads through the prairies with the threat of heavy hail

An active and stormy pattern continues in the prairies, with widespread rain and storms. Storms can be severe at times until Wednesday, threatening strong winds and possible hailstones the size of a golf ball in some areas.

On Thursday, there is another large region at risk of scattered storms, with the highest chances of severe storms developing in parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The cooler weather will extend to the east through the Prades over the weekend, as sub-season temperatures also dominate much of next week. WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY: THREAT OF STRONG STORM WITH STRONG WINDS AND STONE GREATNESS

On Wednesday there is a widespread threat of storms in the prairies, with a couple of areas at higher risk of the storms becoming severe.

“From Calgary to south Edmonton, there is a risk of storms that could cause strong wind gusts and heavy hail, up to the size of nickel and lightning,” says Matt Grinter, a meteorologist with The Weather Network.

In eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba, there is also the threat of stronger storms, with strong gusts of wind and heavy hail on the table.

“The hail in these regions can be a little bigger with the loonie and even the hailstone the size of a golf ball,” Grinter adds. “With this area, there is also the possibility of some rotating storms.”

On Thursday, there is another large region at risk of scattered storms, along with the threat of severe storms in Saskatchewan and Manitoba once again.

The heaviest rainfall with these storms is expected to occur in central Alberta, central Saskatchewan, and parts of southern Manitoba, with general totals of 25-50 mm or more, and locally higher amounts are likely. Rainy weather continues in Manitoba until Saturday.

Cooler weather will extend eastward across the region over the weekend, with a brief warm-up early next week, followed by temperatures almost below the season for much of the week.
