A professor of physics at the University of Sydney, the late Ian Johnston continues his exploration of the links between music and physics. Today Ian traces developments during the 19th century as Western music shifted from classicism to romanticism, and as our knowledge of physics advanced in electricity, electromagnetism, and the undulating motion of sound. We also began to understand how the ear and brain work together and allow us to perceive and appreciate music.
This program was first broadcast in 1994.
