Sega is ready to relive some of its past glories once again with another retro console. The company has announced the Mega Drive Mini 2. Although the system has only been confirmed for Japan at the moment, it seems likely that Sega will take it to other markets as well. In the case of the US, it will probably be called Genesis Mini 2.
The Mega Drive Mini 2 will include Sega CD games in its 50-title lineup. The full list has not been revealed, but includes Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Virtua Racing and Shining Force CD. It also includes Fantasy Zone, which was never released on Mega Drive / Genesis: it was an arcade title that came to Master System. It is worth noting that the library may be different from other countries.
Sega says all games have been played faithfully. You can also save your progress at any time.
The company will launch the Mega Drive Mini 2 in Japan on October 27th. It will cost 9. 9,980 (about $ 75). Sega is also making a cosmetic accessory that looks like an adorably smaller version of the Sega CD accessory. With a splitter included, you can also mount the original Mega Drive Mini, which is also slightly larger than its successor. The accompanying Sega CD will cost 4,500 yen (approximately $ 37).
We were big fans of the original Genesis Mini, which Sega released in 2019. It had a solid selection of skillfully emulated games and USB ports that allowed users to connect alternative drivers. Fingers crossed Sega includes the six-button version of its driver when it inevitably offers the Mega Drive Mini 2 outside of Japan.
