A spiral of blue light traveled through the skies of New Zealand last night, baffling viewers and sparking speculation on social media.
Star observers and amateur astronomy communities began asking questions and posting photographs of the large light formation, which could be seen from most of the South Island.
Alasdair Burns, a star-watching guide on Stewart Island, said a friend sent him a message around 7:25 p.m. telling him to “go outside and look at the sky.”
“As soon as we got out, it was obvious what he meant,” Burns said. “It looked like a huge spiral galaxy, hanging in the sky and slowly drifting. [It was] a rather strange feeling. “
