The steelmakers organize the Algoma Steel strike committee

Local 2251 of United Steelworkers is preparing for a possible strike against Sault Ste. Marie’s biggest company.

The local union on Thursday informed its members that it has appointed an Algoma Steel strike committee made up of Steve Johnson, Jordan Ambeault, Frank Bruni, Adam Burns and Mike Strachan.

In a bulletin distributed to its grassroots members, union officials called for volunteers to help several strike subcommittees.

Local 2251 represents more than 2,000 workers per hour and is Sault’s largest steel union.

On Monday, local President Mike Da Prat said members had voted 99% in favor of the strike permit.

Two weeks ago, Algoma Steel announced the largest payroll in its 121-year history: $ 150.7 million in benefit-sharing for fiscal year 2022.

The 2022 negotiating committee consists of Mike Da Prat, Mark Molinaro, Bob Roussain, Marino DeGregorio, Luca Robibaro and Janice Merrick.

The current collective agreement expires on July 31.

Local 2251 has scheduled general membership meetings for July 20 and August 17.
