The City of Calgary has closed a 14-block section of Memorial Drive to accommodate flood mitigation work.
The closure went into effect Monday afternoon and extends from Edmonton Trail NE to 10th Street NW. The area is considered to be at significant risk of flooding if the Bow River breaks its banks.
The city declared a state of local emergency Monday afternoon, as more than 100 millimeters of rain, the typical Calgary average, was expected to fall throughout the month of June, Monday through Wednesday.
Precautionary measures already in place include closing roads along the Bow and Elbow Rivers, placing water pumps, and lowering the Glenmore Reservoir.
