The stunning design decision of the Apple iPhone 14 makes sudden sense

Apple is making a big bet on the iPhone 14, which I predict will anger many users. But now we know why …

According to a new TrendForce report (seen by MacRumors), the controversial claims that Apple is equipping the iPhone 14 with the same A15 chip used in the iPhone 13 are not entirely accurate. The research states that a subtle but important update will be made.

TrendForce reports that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will receive a 50% increase in RAM compared to the 2021 iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini:

  • iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini: 4 GB (LPDDR4X)
  • iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max: 6 GB (LPDDR4X)

This increase in RAM is what Apple used in the iPhone 13 Pro models, which means that Apple can market the iPhone 14 with “professional-grade performance” at a more affordable price. Also, this extra RAM has very clear real-world advantages in testing, and my hunch is that Apple will combine it with the iPhone 13 Pro’s 5-core GPU and iPhone 13’s 4-core GPU.

Yes, technically this is still last year’s hardware, but at least there are tangible increases, which will be crucial if Apple really plans to rename the chip controversially.

On the other hand, the performance gap between the iPhone 14 Pro and non-Pro models still looks set to widen. This is because the second part of the TrendForce report states that Apple will upgrade the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to LPDDR5 RAM, which is 1.5 times faster (6400 vs 4266 Mbps) than LPDDR4x in addition to being more energy efficient.

Accompany it with the move from Pro models to a new A16 chip, and “go to Pro” would mean a lot more in 2022 than in any previous generation of iPhone. Other exclusive models of iPhone 14 Pro include a new design, updated cameras and a significant price increase.

Despite all this, the regulatory changes that are likely to be imposed on Apple in 2023 mean that I would personally avoid all iPhone models this year. But I appreciate that the appeal of the new iPhone 14 Pros will be hard to resist.
