The Texas Supreme Court on Friday blocked a lower court order allowing some abortions.

The decision is the latest development in a couple of wild weeks for the state of Texas.

On Friday, June 24, a majority of the U.S. Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending constitutionally protected abortion rights nationwide.

The decision led to the entry into force of so-called “trigger laws” in nearly two dozen states.

One such law, signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, prevented abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy. The law is commonly known as a “heartbeat law,” as it prohibits abortions once a heartbeat is detected in a fetus.

Abortion service providers throughout Texas were forced to cancel abortion operations and notify those who had an appointment for an abortion that they could not provide the service.

Almost immediately after the law went into effect, however, some abortion providers rushed to maintain the legal practice.
