When Wes Unseld Jr. returned to Denver in December for the first time since becoming the Washington Wizards head coach, Monte Morris was there to greet him.
The Nuggets baseman was one of the few players who approached the Washington sideline before the game to embrace the former Denver best assistant; Morris approached Unseld with a wide smile and an outstretched hand before hugging him and making him bend over with laughter.
The couple may have better times on the sidelines.
In the team’s first major move during the offseason, the Wizards agreed to trade Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith for Morris and veteran winger Will Barton, according to two people with knowledge of the transaction. The move will not be made official until July 6, when the league finalizes the salary cap and luxury tax numbers for the 2022-23 season.

The deal comes the day before free agency begins and marks one of the Wizards ’two top priorities this summer: finding a reliable solution as a basis.
The other priority is to re-sign the cornerstone of the Bradley Beal franchise with a long-term contract.
Beal has until 5 p.m. Wednesday to exercise his $ 36.4 million player option for the 2022-23 season or opt out as expected. If he declines his choice, Beal can re-sign with the Wizards for a maximum contract of about $ 250 million for five years or join a different team, either through a free agency or a signing and trade agreement.
Staying with the Wizards is financially prudent for the guard, who turned 29 on Tuesday. The largest contract any other team could offer Beal is worth about $ 185 million over four years.
Should Beal return, he will find in his place a stable base that reviews many Washington boxes. Athletic first reported the change.

Morris, 27, is not the missing piece to compete in a hypothetical “big three” with Beal and Kristaps Porzingis.
But he has three assets that make him an excellent fit for the Magi: he is a capable defender; he cares more about keeping the team organized and handing out assists than scoring; and is owed just over $ 18.9 million over the next two seasons. For a team that could soon be tied up with a massive contract for Beal and that owes Porzingis nearly $ 70 million over the next two years, that’s a friendly salary.
The people at the Washington reception also like Morris ’leadership skills and appreciate his path to the pros. The guard signed a two-way contract with Denver in 2017 and got to start 74 games last year while Jamal Murray was rehabilitating an ACL injury.
Morris averaged 12.6 points and 4.4 assists per game last season. And while he’s not considered a first-team player, he can put the ball in the hoop – his 58.3 real-time shooting percentage was eighth among all bases last season, tied with Dallas ’Jalen Brunson.
As an advantage, he and Washington striker Kyle Kuzma have ties that go back to elementary school.
Barton, a 31-year-old wing who could be well behind Beal at the depth table, is a Baltimore native who also has experience with Unseld from his days together in Denver. He averaged 14.7 points in more than 30 minutes per game last season and shot 43.8 percent from the ground and 36.5 percent from three points.
Wizards reception members like its versatility. Barton can create his own goal opportunities or set up others, and get off the bench or start as needed.
Washington will still have to find depth behind Morris as a base, as Raul Neto and Tomas Satoransky are both ready for free agency. The team hosted a pair of potential prospects in a three-day minicamp over the weekend to Kris Dunn, the fifth pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, and Pierria Henry, a U.S. base who has become a Euroleague standout in recent years. .
Meanwhile, veteran baseman Smith is heading to his No. 13 team, an NBA record.
